Check Engine Light
What is a check engine light? Every car has a check engine warning light. This is a light that appears on your dashboard which indicates a malfunction in your engine.
Your engine light plays an important safety role in your vehicle. Engine lights can highlight various minor issues. But they can also warn you about something more serious.
A check engine light warning should never be ignored. At Foreign Affairs Motorwerks, we’ll conduct a thorough assessment to find and fix the reason behind your check engine light warning.
We Fix Various Engine Malfunctions
Your check engine light is highlighting an engine malfunction. Here are the most common reasons that your check engine light comes on.
Faulty Gas Cap
Faulty or loose gas caps are often a result of a lack of tightening. But they can also be cracked and damaged because of other factors, such as deterioration. Faulty gas caps mean that fuel vapors can escape. These can enter your cabin and also throw your fuel system out of sync. The result is reduced gas mileage and increased emissions.
Faulty Oxygen Sensor
Your oxygen sensor monitors the amount of unburnt oxygen from the exhaust. It helps to maintain optimal engine combustion. Oxygen sensor failure can be a result of your sensor being covered in oil ash. This results in incorrect data going to the ECU. This affects the oxygen and fuel mixture. The result again is reduced gas mileage and increased emissions. Our technical team will test your oxygen monitor and replace it if necessary.
Catalytic Converter
Catalytic converters convert carbon monoxide and other toxic gases into safe compounds. A faulty catalytic converter means your vehicle may lose acceleration power. It also causes increases in gas mileage. Catalytic converter failures often point toward other issues, such as faulty oxygen sensors. If your engine light is on, and you’re losing acceleration power, you may need a new catalytic converter. Failing to do so could result in your engine shutting down completely. Our mechanics will inspect and replace your faulty catalytic converter if necessary.
Old Spark Plugs
Spark plugs cause sparks to jump across your combustion chamber. They get the combustion process started in your engine. Failing spark plugs may result in a jump or jolt in your car’s acceleration.
Your check engine light may be a simple spark plug replacement. Performance cars built before 1996 require more frequent spark plug replacements at about every 30,000 miles. Spark plugs in newer cars can last up to 100,000 miles.
At Foreign Affairs Motorwerks, we check spark plugs as a part of ongoing maintenance. Investing in a scheduled maintenance plan means your sparks plugs should never give up on you.
Malfunctioning Mass Airflow Sensor
The mass airflow sensor tells your car how much fuel to allow in based on the amount of air entering the engine. A faulty mass airflow sensor can lead to a host of unwelcome problems. These can include stalling, increased emissions, poor gas mileage, and engine failure.
Regular air filter replacements are key to prolonging the life of your mass airflow sensor. It’s also important that these filters are installed correctly. A malfunctioning mass airflow filter will need to be replaced.
