Drivetrain-Transmission
A healthy engine is nothing without a strong transmission and drivetrain to transfer all that power to the ground. Your car’s transmission and engine make up the drivetrain along with axles, driveshafts, differentials, and for all-wheel drive cars, the transfer case. We all know about engine maintenance and repair, so let’s take a closer look at the maintenance for the rest of the drivetrain.
Our Services
At Foreign Affairs Motorwerks, we offer a number of maintenance and repair services that will keep the drivetrain of your car in tip-top condition or fix any transmission issues:
Clutch And Flywheel Replacement
All cars, whether they’re manual or automatic, have a clutch and flywheel. The clutch and flywheel work together to transfer the movement to the gearbox. The face of the clutch is made of friction material, and when engaged, the material grips the flywheel and allows the engine to turn the gearbox internals. Over time the friction material wears away, which can make engaging gears more difficult.
If left to wear away completely, the metal backing of the clutch will contact the flywheel, which can scorch, warp and carve into it. In these situations when the clutch is replaced, the flywheel often needs to be replaced too. If a worn clutch is caught in time, and the flywheel is undamaged, only the clutch will need to be replaced.
These are the most common symptoms of a worn clutch:
- Acceleration has greatly decreased
- Gears grind during shifting
- Loose or sticky clutch pedal
- Won’t go into gear when the engine is running
- Won’t stay in gear
Transmission Fluid Flush
About 80% of all automatic transmission issues we see in our shop are caused by bad automatic transmission fluid (ATF). Just like engine oil, ATF degrades over time and collects dirt in the transmission. This causes the ATF to thicken and become more mud-like, which can get stuck in coolant lines, the torque converters, and valve bodies.
A full transmission flush ensures that every drop of the old transmission fluid is removed and replaced with new clean ATF. Depending on your driving style, the weight of your vehicle and how often you tow, we recommend a transmission flush every 30,000 to 60,000 miles.
Differential and Transfer Case Fluid Flush
Just like your transmission, your transfer case and differential needs to be serviced every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, depending on your vehicle. Only rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive cars have differentials, and only all-wheel-drive cars have a transfer case.
Just like engine oil, the oil in your differential keeps components well lubricated and cooled. As differential fluid degrades, it becomes thinner and offers less protection to the gears, which can lead to these gears becoming damaged or seizing.
Transmission Rebuilds
Sometimes there is no other solution to your transmission issues other than a rebuild. Rebuilding a transmission gives you all the advantages of a new transmission without the staggering cost of one. A transmission rebuild can take many forms. Sometimes a gear set needs to be completely replaced, and other times mechatronic units go bad.
In either case, we strip the gearbox down, inspect all components and replace the parts with either OEM parts or with certified aftermarket parts at the customer’s discretion. While your gearbox is out, it’s often a good time to replace the clutch too.
Drivetrain Upgrades
Being a performance shop, we would never forget to mention performance upgrades. We carry a variety of products from the best aftermarket and performance brands. Increasing your car’s performance? We can fit a clutch to handle all that newfound power. Looking to get the most out of the power you already have? A lightweight flywheel and driveshaft can make putting the power to the ground easier. Is your truck overheating whenever it’s time to tow the racecar? Let us fix that with an upgraded transmission cooler and finned differential cover. No matter your upgrade, we have drivetrain solutions to match!
