In today’s world, cars are so loaded with technology that they give smartphones a run for their money. So, how do you find a good auto mechanic? At Foreign Affairs Motorsport we compiled what we feel are the five most important points of a good mechanic to make your search easier.

1. Honesty and Integrity

There are many hustlers out there looking to make a quick buck and even dealerships can be dishonest in their treatment of their clients.

Unfortunately, we don’t have a universal tester that can magically tell you if someone is honest or not but your gut feeling is often right. It’s also a good idea to speak to people who have already used the technician and get their opinions.

2. Experience

A good auto mechanic has experience. or is working as part of an experienced team.

A little hands-on knowledge is what separates the sheep from the goats and can often shorten a repair that would otherwise take hours. At Foreign Affairs Motorsport we have over 30 years of combined experience.

3. Customer Treatment and Work Ethic

‘Never rush a mechanic,’ is an old 20th-century maxim, and there is some truth in it. No technician likes the client breathing down their neck and putting undue pressure on your shop can often result in errors and the repair actually taking longer.

Keep a good rapport with the techs, and give them time. In the same breath, a technician is a professional and should treat you with respect at all times. They should work efficiently and be prepared to put in extra hours to meet and exceed a customer’s demand. 4. Guaranteed Work

A good shop will usually offer a warranty on work that’s been done.

This can be anything from a month to a year depending on the repair. Mistakes do happen and what this means is that the shop has taken out liability insurance and is willing to take responsibility for their work. 5. Certification

Look for a trained technician.

One of the best independent testing organizations is the American Service Excellence or ASE. It is a tricky certificate to get, you need either two years of job experience or a year on the job and a two-year degree. In addition to this, you need to pass the ASE test initially and then again every five years to keep the certificate. At Foreign Affairs Motorsport, we don’t employ technicians that aren’t ASE certified.
