Beyond The Service Light Inside The Precision World Of McLaren Maintenance

mclaren maintenance

McLaren first entered the world of supercars in 1992 with the introduction of the McLaren F1, one of the most important production vehicles of all time. And 33 years later, still the record holder for the world’s fastest naturally aspirated road legal vehicle. While Ferrari was the first to bring Formula 1 technologies to the street with the F40 and F50, McLaren was the brand that really pushed the limits of what they could bring over from their F1 team. When McLaren reentered the supercar market in 2010 with MP4-12C, they had a mission to continue to bring Formula 1 experiences to the road, and pit crew efficiency to every McLaren maintenance appointment.

The Importance Of Maintaining Your McLaren

While McLaren’s road cars aren’t as extreme as their open-wheeled cousins, they still have incredibly high-strung drivetrains with incredibly tight tolerances to ensure that every kilowatt of power and every foot-pound of torque is extracted from the engine and delivered to the road with peak efficiency.

The downside of sitting on the bleeding edge of performance is increased service intervals and service complexity. With every component being so tightly integrated and packaged, being late on one service or having a subpar inspection can lead to a domino effect of issues that would ultimately need to be addressed in a far larger repair job.

Unfortunately, this combination has led to McLaren’s gaining an unfair reputation of being unreliable, as owners begin taking these vehicles to supercar repair shops that aren’t familiar with the brand’s unique needs.

The Race Car Problem

A lot of the current issues facing McLaren maintenance are reminiscent of issues that many race teams turned producers have faced in the past.

Early iterations of Ferraris were nothing more than race cars that had license plate holders. Lotus’ first offerings were seen as track cars you didn’t need to trailer, but with time, both these brands found ways not only to improve production, but to align service tasks and product life spans with the expectation of road users.

McLaren is coming out of a weird period of the brand’s life cycle, where they are established enough to start making changes that better suit a road car, rather than a race car that often just needs to make it through a season, and where only the best and most talented mechanics will work on it.

How Do I Keep My McLaren On The Road?

The best way to keep your McLaren on the road and in top performing spec is to follow the steps of the Formula 1 team.

The first step is to find an auto repair shop that specializes in exotic cars. I’m not talking about supercars. We’re talking exotic. They need to be doing a little more than Ferraris and Lamborghinis. We’re looking for a shop that won’t shy away from Paganis, Bugattis, Koeningseggs, and, of course, McLaren.

If you’re struggling to get started, reaching out to a bunch of fellow McLaren enthusiasts, like those of the McLaren Owners Club Florida, is a good start.

Building A Rapport With Your Mechanic

Then you want to build a rapport with your repair shop. The worst thing you can do for any car is jump from repair shop to repair shop, having each task completed by different mechanics. The idea behind finding a good mechanic and sticking with them is that they build a history with your car. They become familiar with the quirks and features of your car.

They’ll be more likely to be able to identify damage between services, gauge the deterioration of consumable parts, and ultimately help you build a bespoke service plan that best suits you and your McLaren’s needs.

Knowing the Parts Bin

Supercar makers have been digging through larger manufacturers’ parts bins for decades. The original McLaren F1 borrowed its taillight from a bus. Lamborghini used the side markers from a Ford Focus for the Murcielago. Ferrari will often use components manufactured by Alfa Romeo and Fiat. Porsche borrows a lot from Volkswagen. When chasing performance, sometimes borrowing something that just works is the way to keep production moving forward.

Modern McLaren, and especially the MC4-12C, borrowed a lot of parts from Nissan. The M838T engine found in the MC4-12C, and all subsequent V8s, can trace their roots back to the VRH35L engine, originally developed by Nissan for Endurance racing. This architecture makes provisions to use known Nissan components such as Mass air flow sensors, coil packs, and even high-pressure fuel pumps.

The benefit of this is, any mechanic who has made his name working on Mclaren will know which parts will need to be ordered from McLaren, and what parts can be borrowed off a R35 GTR.
