BMW Repair Maintenance Tips That Help Prevent Costly Breakdowns

bmw repair

BMW has been known to get a bad rap for being ‘unreliable’, and even worse, expensive to repair. The main cause is a lack of maintenance tasks being left unattended for too long. While BMWs are hailed as some of the best enthusiast-driving cars, they are still at their core, a German Luxury brand, and while used models get cheaper, the maintenance tasks rarely do. So if you’ve recently fallen in love with a Bavarian, let’s look at some of the best BMW repair and maintenance tips to ensure your next breakdown doesn’t end in a broken heart.

Routine Factory Maintenance For Your BMW

We could harp on about the importance of following your BMW’s recommended service schedule (and in fact we have), so we’ll keep it short and sweet this time around. The best way to avoid costly breakdowns and keep your BMW running happily is to follow BMW’s recommended service schedule.

Better yet, you should be working with a single service center, so that history can be developed on your Beemer, and a tailored BMW service plan can be developed between you and your service center.

BMW Battery Maintenance

BMW’s reputation for sketchy electronics can often be traced back to two main culprits: the battery and the alternator. A voltage drop as small as 0.5V can be enough to cause your Beemer’s electrical systems to glitch out of important functions, cause various issues, and make you believe your car is possessed.

Battery care starts with visible inspection of the battery at every oil change, inspecting the terminals for any signs of corrosion, as well as checking the casing for cracks and other damage. Your BMW service technician should also check the charge level; a battery that fails to hold less than 11.8V at rest and 12.4V under load should be replaced.

Your battery’s partner in crime, the alternator, should also be inspected to ensure it is outputting between 13.5V and 14.8V when the engine is running. Too much voltage can cause severe damage to the battery, while too little will not sufficiently charge it.

BMW Oil Changes and Bearing Failure

One of, if not the most, talked about failures on BMWs is the dreaded rod bearing wear. As BMW pushes to extract more and more power out of their engines, tolerances are being pushed closer and tighter with every generation of engine, with the tolerances around the rod bearing being at its limit for several generations now.

The downside of this increased power is more frequent oil changes and stricter maintenance needs. With tolerances this tight, your BMW’s engine is asking for a lot more out of its oil, an ask that old worn-out oil just cannot answer. To keep your BMW happy, we recommend a shorter oil change schedule, opting for oil changes closer to the 7,500-mile mark rather than BMW’s recommended oil change at 10,000 miles.

If you’re a fan of spirited driving, and as a BMW owner, we know you are, we recommend discussing an oil pan baffle upgrade with your mechanic. Upgraded oil pan baffles ensure that the majority of the oil in your pan stays near the oil pickup during high G–force corners, and ensures your Beemer isn’t starving for oil.

Cooling System Service

Performance comes with one major by-product: heat. The faster you go, the more horsepower you create, and the more heat that inevitably gets produced. Engines hate heat, and a heat-soaked engine will create less power, and in the worst scenarios, destroy it. To ensure that heat is continuously being pulled away from your engine, you need your coolant, coolant pump, and radiator working in perfect harmony.

As coolant ages, it not only gets dirtier, but it also loses its ability to withhold heat. Most cooling systems run hotter than the boiling point of water when at operating temperature. Dirt also impacts the coolant’s ability to dissipate heat when it hits the radiator. A shoddy radiator allows less heat transfer between the coolant and the atmosphere, and a pump makes sure the coolant gets the heat from the engine to the radiator.

Your BMW’s cooling system should be flushed every three years or 30,000 Miles, and water pumps should be replaced proactively at or before the 80,000-mile mark. We’ve seen unmaintained coolant systems cause all kinds of havoc, from blown expansion tanks to pistons welding themselves to the block from heat.

BMW Transmission Service

BMW advertises its vehicles as having a lifetime transmission fluid. What they fail to mention is that when they talk about a lifetime, they mean it as the the average time BMW is owned by its first owner, 60,000 miles. The truth is, no fluid in your vehicle could ever last an actual lifetime, and failing to service your transmission often leads to harsh shifts, delayed shifts, and premature failure.

To avoid this costly BMW repair bill, your Beemer should have all its transmission fluid drained and replaced, along with having the transmission filter changed every 60,000 miles.
