What Is An ASE Certified Technician?
When looking for a reputable mechanic shop, one of the easiest places to start are shops that exclusively hire ASE technicians. You may be thinking, “Ok sure, but what exactly is the ASE, and why is an ASE certified technician so great?” Well, we’re glad you asked! This is what makes ASE Certified Technicians stand out from the crowd.
What is the ASE?
The ASE, or more formally The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to setting the standard for quality vehicle service and repair. They have achieved this by creating a network of shops around the country that have to stick to strict guidelines which promote excellence in all areas of automotive repair, service, and parts distribution. Furthermore, all ASE-approved member shops only hire ASE Certified Technicians for all technical positions.
The benefit of this is that ASE can offer protection for shop owners, customers, and technicians. By certifying technicians, shop owners and customers can better judge the level of expertise of any given technician before hiring them. Certified technicians are protected by having formal documentation to back their skill level to ensure they are paid fairly.
Certification Pathway
There are three levels of certification, starting with the ASE Entry-Level Certification, followed by the ASE Professional Technician, and finally the ASE Master Technician.
Requirements for an ASE Entry-Level Technician
In order to become an ASE Entry-Level technician, candidates are required to pass the entry-level certification test. ASE offers several entry-level programs and tests through the ASE Education Foundation.
How Do I Become an ASE Certified Professional Technician?
There are two ways of becoming an ASE Certified Technician. The most common way is by completing a minimum of two years of on-the-job training with an ASE-approved shop and passing the ASE Certification test. The second method is by completing a minimum of one year of on-the-job with an ASE-approved shop, completing at least a two-year degree in automotive repair, before passing the ASE Certification test.
There are 52 different certification tests that cover various disciplines such as cars and light trucks, collision repair, medium to heavy trucks, truck equipment, school and transit buses, automotive and truck parts, and military tactical ground vehicles.
Becoming an ASE Master Technician
After achieving several ASE Certifications, Professional Technicians can begin work in becoming an ASE Master Technician. Master Technicians are the best of the best, are often the first to be offered shop foreman and training positions. To become a Master Technician, you must achieve all the available certifications for one of the following series:
- Automobile
- Collision and Repair
- Medium to Heavy Truck
- Truck Equipment
- Transit Bus
- School Bus
Other ASE Programs
The ASE offers several non-certification programs that offer recognition for completing them. The Introduction to Automobile Service Program offers a beginner’s guide to educate anyone interested in potentially pursuing a career in automotive service and repair and is the perfect starting point to getting your ASE certification.
