Mercedes Performance With Dynamic Select
Mercedes and performance are two words that have become synonymous with one another. They’re like peas and carrots as Forrest Gump would say. Mercedes has ensured that performance has remained synonymous with its name by constantly innovating and improving. Its new Dynamic Select features are no different. We explore the upgrades to Mercedes performance with Dynamic Select to see its capabilities.
What is Dynamic Select?
As drivers, we don’t have one driving style. Our driving style changes depending on the road we are on, the mood we’re in or because of any number of factors. Mercedes has taken note of this and developed Dynamic Select which allows drivers to adapt how their vehicle feels to their needs at specific times.
How Does It Work
A Dynamic Select switch is present on the console or dash. This presents the driver with up to five driving modes. Each mode makes different adjustments to the car’s drive train and chassis. This is what enables the car to perform differently depending on which mode the driver selects thereby catering to the driver’s current driving style. Dynamic Select allows the driver to fine tune various things affecting the way the car is behaving such as throttle response or shift points.
What Modes Are Available With Dynamic Select?
-
Comfort Mode
This mode is automatically engaged when the car is started. It adjusts the car’s behavior to optimize smoothness and comfort. In comfort mode, fuel economy is also prioritized by engaging the car’s STOP/START system which turn the car off when you stop and back on when you start moving again. This mode is probably what most drivers will use on their daily commutes as it is relaxing and comfortable.
-
Eco Mode
This mode is for when the driver is feeling more environmentally (or economically) conscious. Again, the STOP/START system is engaged but it also optimizes the gear shifting, climate control and other systems so that they can deliver their most efficient performance. This mode is even efficient when slowing down as the car begins to do something akin to coasting when breaking in this mode. This is done by decoupling the engine. All this economy does not mean that the car is down on power and as such, there is no need to change modes when the need to accelerate arises.
-
Sport Mode
This is one of the more fun modes for when the driver needs a bit more performance from the vehicle. In this mode, the driver will feel an instant response from the throttle and quicker steering maneuvers. The engine will also rev higher before changing to a higher gear as one would do when driving a car in a performance driven manner. Some models of Mercedes come with adjustable suspension and in these models, the suspension will firm up for precise and harsher cornering.
-
Sport Plus Mode
This mode is available on certain models. As the name suggests, it is like sport mode but a bit sportier. It alters the driver train and chassis to make the vehicle extremely sharp and performance driven.
-
Race Mode
This mode is only available on AMG model Mercedes. AMG models are designed to focus on high performance and this mode is designed to unleash that performance. Expect all the things from Sport and Sport Plus mode but with the added AMG sharpness and performance. This mode is particularly well suited to track days.
-
Off-Road Mode
This mode is available on Mercedes SUVs. Again, the mode adjusts the drive train and chassis but this time it sets the vehicle up to ensure that it is capable of tackling the tough terrain it is being presented with. This mode is great for technical, low speed trails.
-
Individual Model
This mode is available on all models and may be particularly interesting to more experienced drivers. This mode allows the drivers to veer away from the preset modes and adjust the drive train and chassis to suit their specific needs. In this model you can even make the car completely manual (using the paddle shifts) which will excite many petrol heads.
Dynamic Select moves away from the standard get in and be satisfied driving experience we have become so accustomed to. It allows drivers to set up their vehicles in a way that suits their driving style at any moment.
