Service Tips For BMW Maintenance

BMW Maintenance

BMW is world-renowned for making some of the best cars in the world. With sporty performance and looks, driving a BMW is a common bucket list item.

Keeping your BMW in top shape relies on a solid BMW maintenance plan. We all need to start somewhere. Here are the key service tips when it comes to maintaining your BMW.

Check Your Oil Regularly

Regular oil checks will keep your engine running clean. It’s best to get your oil checked out more frequently than your service book may advise. Over time, motor oil deteriorates and loses its viscosity. Old oil won’t lubricate your engine components, which will increase your engine’s wear and tear. Regular oil changes will also lead to better consumption and engine performance.

Check Your BMW’s Tires

A quick visual tire inspection is always a good idea. Get in the habit of checking your tire pressure often. Correct tire pressure will prolong your tire life and give you better road-holding performance.

Next, it’s good to check your tire wear. To do this, you’ll need to locate your tread wear indicators. They are little raised bumps of rubber between your tire tread. If your tread is at the same level or lower than the indicators, then it’s time to change your tires.

Another novel way is to place a penny upside down between your tread. If you can see Lincoln’s face, then your tread is worn.

Change The Spark Plugs

Spark plugs can be overlooked. They play a key role in engine combustion. Neglect these little guys, and your engine timing and performance may be way out.

Spark plugs need to be changed at specific intervals. These will form part of a BMW scheduled service plan. If you don’t have one of these, it comes highly recommended. Investing in a scheduled maintenance plan takes all the stress off you. It’s also good to change your air filters at the same time. This will keep your engine breathing well.

Check Your Belts

Your BMW has two main belts to check: the timing belt and the serpentine belt. Your timing belt is located on the inside of your engine; it’s what keeps your camshaft turning. Without a turning camshaft, your engine won’t run. Your timing belt can loosen over time and may even need replacement. It’s not something you want to neglect, and this can lead to engine failure. Driving a BMW 5 Series? Some 5 Series models may experience a timing belt snap.

Your serpentine belt is aptly named due to its ‘snake-like’ appearance. It’s on the outside of your engine block and transfers power to various components on your car. These only need to be replaced around every 60,000 miles. But make sure you don’t forget to check it. Oh wait, that’s what your scheduled BMW maintenance plan will do for you!

Keep Your Cooling System Healthy

Thermostat and water pump failure should also be inspected on your BMW. If you notice your engine service light on the dashboard, it’s best to get it checked out quickly. Faulty cooling systems form a large part of engine mechanical failures. Get your trusted mechanic onto this before it causes damage.
