What Motor Oil Do Mechanics Recommend?

mechanics

An experienced mechanic will have a good understanding of motor oils. More importantly, they know which motor oil is right for your vehicle. Get your oil choice wrong and your car won’t perform at its best. It may even cause damage to your engine. Let’s hear from the mechanics about which motor oils they recommend.

Motor Oil’s Amazing Benefits

Without motor oil, your engine would overheat and seize up. Motor oil increases your car’s reliability, smooth running, and performance. Oil plays an important role in cleaning out your engine from deposits. This helps to reduce the friction between moving parts. Using the right motor oil will prolong the life of your engine and add to its performance.

Which Engine Oil Is Right for My Car?

When it comes down to choosing, it’s best to leave this in the hands of your trusted mechanic. Here’s our mechanics lowdown on different engine oils.

  • Conventional Oil

Also known as mineral oil, conventional oil is the standard all-purpose motor oil. It’s manufactured from refined crude oil and is budget friendly. Mineral oil offers reasonable performance and many cars on the road use it.

On the downside, it’s not well refined, which means that it doesn’t offer good protection. Conventional oil also doesn’t carry a high resistance to heat. This is one of the reasons why it’s not recommended for performance cars.

  • Synthetic Oil

Synthetic oils have a high heat tolerance and don’t degrade as quickly. Their oxidation resistance allows them to last around 6,000 miles between oil changes. This is double that of the 3,000 miles that conventional oil offers. Synthetic oils are man-made artificial compounds. This means they can be formulated for different cars. And this is why they’re great for performance cars!

An easy way to think of synthetic oils is to think of them as more ‘slippery’. This means they have a high anti-friction value. When engine parts are moving together smoothly, the benefit is improved fuel economy. Synthetic oils are great for performance driving, as well as start-stop traffic. Performance mechanics recommend synthetics for many performance vehicles.

  • Synthetic Oil Blend

Synthetic oils are manufactured from a combination of synthetic and conventional oils. The aim of synthetic blends is to capture the benefits of both types of motor oil. As you might expect, hybrid motor oil doesn’t compare to the performance levels of synthetic oil. But they do generally last longer than conventional oils. Synthetic oil blends form a good middle ground.

Viscosity – Important Mechanic Lingo

Quality motor oils have a high viscosity. But you may be wondering what in the world this word means. Well, think of it about honey and water. They’re both liquids, but they have a different consistency and flow rate. The flow rate is known as viscosity. It regulates the speed at which motor oil flows.

High viscosity oils are more resistant to flow. This gives them their high anti-friction properties. When the viscosity is too low, your oil may not be adequately lubricating our engine. Synthetics have the perfect viscosity balance. Chat to your performance mechanic about finding the right synthetic oil for your car.

Top Engine Oils To Consider

Different engine oils have different grading. The main US oil grading group is the American Petroleum Institute (API). A safe oil grading level to shoot for is the SM rating or higher. A popular synthetic oil choice is Mobil 1 0W-40 engine oil. It provides excellent cleaning power, component wear protection, and performance. And don’t be put off by the higher price tag. Remember that synthetics last longer and provide more protection for your engine. Other motor oil recommendations include:

  • Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30, and
  • Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30.
