Common Range Rover Repairs
We see our fair share of Range Rovers come through our doors with greatly varying issues and repair needs. A major part of every service is performing diagnostics, fixing any issues that have already arisen and addressing any future repairs that may arise. Some of the most common Range Rover repairs to look out for are:
Air Suspension Failure
Range Rovers use air suspension to adjust ride height and firmness to suit their environment and current use. Unfortunately, air suspension systems are more complex than regular coil and damper suspension. There are three ways in which air suspension systems fail:
- Leaks in the airbags
- Leaks in the lines leading from the compressor to each airbag
- Compressor failure.
If you have noticed that your Range Rover’s ride height drops after standing, or if the air compression never stops running while driving, it is a sign that your air suspension has developed a slow leak. The best way to locate a leak is to have your technician introduce smoke into the compressor and find where the smoke is escaping.
While service kits exist for compressors and hard-line fittings, any damage to flexible lines or airbags will require these components to be replaced.
Leaky Gaskets
The gaskets used by Range Rover have a notoriously short life span, which can lead to several leaks from the engine, coolant systems, and transmission. Once a leak develops, it’s usually not enough to fix the one failed gasket to prevent future leaks from rapidly occurring. Therefore, it’s recommended that all the engine gaskets and seals be replaced alongside the bad gasket.
Water Leaks
Similar to their gaskets, the weather seals on Range Rovers seem to have a short life span, too. Wetness in the carpet and roof liner around the doors and trunk can indicate that the weather seals are failing. Water pooling in the front foot wells and in the trunk behind the wheel wells is a sign that the sunroof seals have failed. It could also mean that the sunroof drains are obstructed or blocked.
Transmission Recalls
Range Rover has had several transmission recalls over the last decade, with the majority of them being related to harsh downshifts and the transmission getting stuck in gear. One of the largest factors that contribute to transmission issues is due to a concern we already addressed: poor quality gaskets.
Once a transmission gasket develops a leak, the vehicle is often operated with the incorrect amount of transmission fluid. This can lead to insufficient lubrication of the gearbox internals, which leads to scraping and grinding, which creates metal shavings. These metal shavings can cause blockages in the transmission valve body, which allows air to become trapped and affect regular operation. While replacing the gasket and flushing the transmission can fix the issue, it is fairly common for the valve body to need to be replaced, too.
Rust
Range Rovers make use of both aluminum and steel. When in contact, these metals can cause each other to corrode, which is accelerated by the strong salt content of Florida ocean air. To prevent this, Range Rover sprays a protective sealant on the underside of their cars and in the seams where steel and aluminum are likely to be in contact.
Through regular use of the vehicle, this sealant can wear away, which leaves your vehicle exposed. The best defense against rust and corrosion is to have your Range Rover inspected and have the corrosion-inhibiting sealant reapplied regularly.
