A General Auto Repair Checklist

We all want our cars to be looked after properly. As they don’t look after themselves, it’s our responsibility as car owners to regularly perform scheduled maintenance checks on our vehicles. But how do you know what your car’s maintenance needs requirements are? And how often you should be performing these checks? By following our auto repair checklist, you’ll be able to help you to keep your car in its top condition. Here’s our trusted auto repair checklist that will keep you ahead in the car maintenance game.

Regular Auto Repair Checks

Certain checks should be carried out regularly. Perhaps not every time you drive, but weekly or at least monthly. Keeping a handle on these areas will ensure safe and economical daily driving.

  • Check that your tires are inflated correctly. Look out for even tire tread wear and ensure that the sides of your tires aren’t overly worn.
  • Keep an eye on your oil and coolant levels. These can drop over time and they play a big role in lubricating and cooling your engine.
  • Have the occasional look under your car for any fluid leaks.
  • Observe your transmission fluid and power steering fluid levels to ensure that they aren’t depleted.
  • Top off your windscreen washer fluid.
  • Perform a visual check of your engine belts and hoses for any cracking or leaks

Six Month Checklist

This checklist doesn’t require regular attention but should be conducted about twice a year depending on your mileage. If you’re averaging around 3,000 miles or more, then this is the list to check.

  • Get your engine oil and filter changed every 3,000 miles.
  • Rotate your tires to ensure even tire wear. This will increase the lifespan of your tires.
  • Get an auto repair specialist to check your battery for any signs of leaks or malfunctions.
  • Check your brake fluid and top it up if necessary.
  • Perform a spare tire check. Be sure to check tire pressure and also ensure that all emergency tire replacement components are present.
  • Do a brief brake inspection. This should include a visual inspection and a braking test.
  • Get your front and rear suspension inspected.

Annual Checklist

A few items require an annual check-up. These items may not be as essential to the daily running of your car, but they all play an important role in keeping you comfortable and safe.

  • Performs an air-conditioner and heater inspection and service if necessary.
  • Do a transmission fluid and filter change. The transmission may need to be flushed if you’ve been doing any towing.
  • Replace your windshield wiper blades.
  • Perform a tune-up to ensure peak performance and fuel economy.

The Three To Five Year Checks

These checks are mostly routine replacements. Over time, certain parts such as your battery will age and hold less charge. It may be time to replace these and other running components.

  • Replace your engine belts.
  • Replace your battery.
  • Replace the timing belt.
  • Replace the fuel filter.
  • Flush out the engine cooling system.
  • Perform a thorough test of your car’s electrical system.
