BMW Repair: Why Is My Bimmer Vibrating?

BMW repair

BMW’s are well-built machines. That legendary German standard of engineering runs throughout every Bimmer’s blood, which gives those who drive them a deep sense of satisfaction. This doesn’t mean that they’re immune to problems from time to time. One of these common issues is a steering wheel vibration, which can have several different causes. Vibrations should be fixed as soon as possible to avoid any potential safety concerns.

Here’s a look at why your BMW is vibrating, and how a BMW repair specialist can get you sorted in no time.

Check Your Rotors And Engine Mounts

If your steering wheel starts to vibrate when you accelerate, that could be due to a warped rotor. Acceleration can put stress on the rotor, and vibration associated with this is a sign of a failing caliper or equalizer. Rotor repairs are a fairly easy fix, and you should be able to notice an immediate difference. Steering wheel vibrations that take place as a result of increased acceleration can likely be the result of a warped rotor.

Damaged engine mounts are another culprit during acceleration. When engine mounts are loose or damaged, they can’t absorb the vibrations produced by the engine that they normally would be able to. It may be time to get your engine mounts replaced or tightened.

Watch Those Wheel Bearings

Worn wheel bearings are another main contributor. Over time, they may run dry as they lose their lubrication. When they lose lubricant, it becomes harder for your wheels to spin. This places additional strain on the car and the engine. Unlike many other causes, vibration caused by damaged wheel bearings can be identified at slower speeds. You may also notice a droning noise coming from your wheels, which is another sign that the bearings may be past their sell-by date. It’s best to get a BMW repair expert to check your bearings if you suspect a problem.

Your Wheel Balance Could Be To Blame

Here’s a more specific cause: if you notice vibrations that only occur at around 50-60mph, it could well be a wheel balance issue. Over time, your BMW’s wheel balance will deteriorate and change. This is why it’s recommended to get your wheels re-balanced every 3,000-6,000 miles. Failing to do this could result in uneven tire wear and ongoing shaking and vibration.

Your Suspension Could Be Shot

Your Bimmer’s Suspension system will wear down or loosen up over time. This can result in a ball joint or bushing crack, which can be identified by sudden squeaks or clanks being heard. Steering wheel vibrations are another tell-tale sign. A compromised suspension system can put your safety into question, which is why it’s recommended to take your BMW to a BMW repair specialist immediately if you suspect a problem.
