BMW Styling Classics: The Most Beautiful Bimmers Ever Made

BMW Styling

It’s no secret that BMW has been at the forefront of conceptual car design, proving that cars are much more than a transportation mechanism. This article looks at the more recent models and explains why we feel they are BMW styling classics. While there is quite a range to choose from, the 8, 6 and 5 series will be highlighted in this article – their designs are quite iconic and were instrumental in BMW cementing its brand for producing conceptually stylish cars.

BMW E39 5 Series

Launched as both a sedan and station wagon in 1995 and 1996 (respectively), the E39 was the first series to make use of aluminum components in the front suspension. Although the exterior design capitalized on the E34 model, the E39 received a considerable facelift with a more elegant and sleeker finish. The engine initially available at launch was the M62 straight 6 and M62 V8, considered new at the time. In 1998, updated versions of these engines were produced with double VANOS, which would increase torque at a low rpm. A sportier model was produced in 1998 with the BMW E39 M5. Kitted with a S62 V8 engine, there were quite a few additions to this model which included additional park distance control sensors in the front bumper, larger navigation and audio monitor and rear head protection air bags. The E39 series produced a stiffer body shell, which increased weight but this offset with the use of lighter aluminum suspension parts. Overall, the E39 5 series was again a step in the right direction for BMW producing models which offered a sheer driving experience.

BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé

Dubbed as the 4-door Coupe, BMW styling did not disappoint their fans with the production of the series 6 Gran Coupé. Continuing the thread of luxury, the interior is covered with soft leather and includes high quality finishes with a contoured dashboard. Safety features are enhanced with the optional heads-up display which projects current speed, speed limits and navigation on the windscreen; allowing the driver to focus purely on the road. A twin power turbo 8-cylinder engine lies under the hood and has two turbo charges, high precision injection and double VANOS as company. Its elegant design and powerful engine makes this another classic BMW model.

BMW 8 Series (First Generation)

The debut of the series started in 1989, with the revelation of the BMW E31. CAD (Computer Aided Design) was used to design the body of the car; the software was considered unusual for a car design at the time. Besides offering a retro look and feel, it’s kitted with pop up lights which for any car enthusiast is a cool feature. It also has the same low drag co-efficient of the Porsche 918 at -0.29. Powered by a V12 engine at 5.0 liters and coupled with a 6-speed manual or four speed auto, the car speeds 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds. The interior is definitely feature filled with auto-dimming rear view mirror, a high performance onboard computer and central locking. Being the second car at the time (post German war) to have a V12 engine and its sleek car design, made this BMW E31 one of the more classical designs.

BMW 8 Series (Concept)

Fast forward to 2017 and BMW was ready to release the second generation 8 series. The car is set to come to market in late 2018. Offering a bold, sleek design with architectural finishes; the BMW 8 oozes luxury with the performance of a sports car. The interior of the car offers luxury finishes with carbon-fiber and aluminum detailing. If that doesn’t sound luxurious enough, the Swarovski glass gearstick is sure to make gear changing feel different. The chassis and exterior body consists of a mix of steel and aluminum, with certain parts made with magnesium. A 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 sits under the hood with other engines, such as six-cylinder inline twin turbocharged or V12, likely to make production. Not only is the much-anticipated BMW 8 a car of beauty but it has the horse power to back it up.

BMW has certainly cemented their position in providing cars that are dynamic but also visually appealing. The FAMS team has worked on many models within its BMW workshop and performance and styling division.
