Tips From An Audi Mechanic To Make Your Car Last Longer

audi mechanic

Turbos and all-wheel drive.

The combination that cemented Audi’s position as a genuine rival in the performance car market alongside Mercedes-Benz and BMW. As Audi continues to bring their most exciting offering Stateside, such as the RS6 and RS3, we have begun receiving this question more often. “What is the best way to care for my Audi?” So, we sat our best Audi mechanic down to get their opinion on the best way to care for your Audi and make it last longer.

Proper Engine and Drivetrain Care

I think we all can agree that a car that doesn’t run isn’t much of a car. To ensure that your Audi’s drivetrain lasts for many years to come, it’s important to make sure you take proper care of it.

The best way to do this is to simply make sure your Audi is serviced within the recommended service intervals, any damage is repaired as soon as possible and that any transmission issues are addressed. This will make sure that your Audi’s fluid levels are full, that all fluids remain in spec and damaged components don’t damage any other components.

One fluid that is often overlooked is engine coolant. It’s recommended that coolant be replaced at least every 30 000 miles, or more frequently if your car sees a lot of track use.

As coolant ages, the properties that give it a higher boiling temperature degrade, lowering the efficiency of your cooling system. It’s recommended to only use a “European car” premixed coolant or a mixture of distilled water and antifreeze in your Audi. Regular water from a faucet contains impurities that when heated can cause limescale to form in the cooling system, or cause corrosion in the engine block.

We’ve seen plenty of car’s come in with just water in their cooling systems, as many people in South Florida believe that the fact that Florida’s weather nearly never drops to freezing, they don’t need antifreeze. While it’s true that antifreeze lowers the freezing point of water to below the regular 32°F, it also raises the boiling to well above 212°F, which improves the efficiency of the cooling system.

Paint Protection

Respraying a car is an expensive job, so we recommend you put in the extra time to protect your Audi’s original paint.

Paint protection products have made amazing strides in the last few years. A few years ago, the best way to protect your car’s paint would be to have the entire care wrapped with a protective film. This is an efficient and quick way to protect your Audi from the elements, scratches and rock chips. However, wrapping a car is expensive, and film begins to yellow with age, which can make the car seem older than it is.

The budget friendly approach most people took was to have the front of the car wrapped with a “clear bra”.

Luckily for us, the paint protection market wasn’t too pleased with their options and recently ceramic coating has become more popular and accessible. Ceramic coating works like a wax, requiring the product to be applied to the car’s paint, being allowed to sit and harden before being buffed off. The coating creates an additional layer to your car’s paint above the clear coat. Scratches, rock chips and acid from bird droppings or tree sap damage the ceramic coating layer.

The best part? The ceramic layer can be easily removed with alcohol-based cleaners and can be reapplied to continue protection.

Responsible Tuning

We aren’t going to pretend that you baby your Audi and never take it past 3,000 rpms. Fact is Audi’s are built to be driven, and we understand the urge to squeeze some more power out of the engine.

Audi’s are very receptive to performance tunes and can benefit greatly from the smallest of modifications. To ensure your Audi lasts longer, opt for tuning companies with a proven track record, and build products specifically for your car. Brands such as Cobb and APR have tuning packages and products that are easy to bolt on and are built to the same quality as the rest of your Audi.
